From TV shows to search engines, artificial intelligence seems to be everywhere these days. No doubt, AI has millions of potential applications that can help make our lives easier. But does this include technical drawings? Keep reading to find out.
Can You Make Technical Drawings With AI?
As we have seen in previous posts, technical drawings are an essential part of many industries, from product design to architecture.
However, creating technical drawings can be a time-consuming and tedious process. And as with most time-consuming processes, more and more people are asking: Can we do it with AI?
The answer is yes, it is already possible to use artificial intelligence to create technical drawings.
A good example is Autodesk’s Fusion 360, a CAD, CAM, CAE, PCB, collaboration and data software platform that includes a generative design feature.
Another example is Solidworks – a popular CAD software used in manufacturing and design. Solidworks is also using AI and machine learning to optimize technical drawings by automating repetitive tasks, such as dimensioning.
What Is Generative Design?
In the context of artificial intelligence, the term “generative” is used for algorithms that can be used to create new content. For example, the most popular form of generative AI these days is ChatGPT, a chatbot that allows users to create written content.
All you have to do is give Chat GPT a prompt such as “Write a sonnet in the style of William Shakespeare” or “Create a bio for a LinkedIn profile,” and the platform will deliver exactly the content you want in a matter of seconds.
The same general principle applies to generative design. When it comes to Fusion 360, it contains manufacturing-ready design concepts that can be optimized for specific constraints, including certain materials or production processes.
AI is also making it possible for technical drawings to be created in real-time. Engineers can make changes to a 3D model in real-time, and AI can generate the corresponding technical drawing simultaneously. This means that engineers and designers can work collaboratively in real-time, making changes and receiving feedback much more quickly.
