Finding your first job after graduation might be harder than we thought it would. It takes a lot of time, a lot of effort, a lot of knocking on as many doors as we can. However, once we face rejection one too many times, we should start thinking about what we may be doing wrong. After we go through this process, landing that job should become easier. In order to get a job in architecture, there are many aspects that will help us achieve this goal sooner and easier, too.
One of the most important aspects to keep in mind is having a remarkable portfolio that makes a memorable impression. Also, limiting our options to advertised jobs only won’t do us any favor. Getting as many recommendations and as much support will come handy, too. And lastly, being aware of our value will help us get a job in architecture sooner rather than later.
Have A Memorable Portfolio
One of the most important tools of a soon-to-be architect is their portfolio. This brief but concise file must be remarkable and should make a memorable impression. Our portfolio should display the best of our work. Having this in mind, try to avoid focusing on process and try to display your product instead. Hiring managers don’t want to see how you’ve improved from your high-school doodles. They want to see what you’re capable of today.
Don´t Apply to Advertised Jobs Only
Applying for a job that has been posted recently can be effective. Most of us go over sometimes endless lists of job openings and submit an application to the majority of them. However, when we do this, we are missing a significant part of our actual options. Another approach is looking for companies or firms you would actually like to work for. Make a list of 20 or 30 companies and then try to contact them. Most companies won’t mind having a resume and portfolio available in case something comes up. With this approach, you might be able to get a head start when a position becomes available. The best part is that you know you chose them, and not the other way around.
Get Recommendations and Support
Even when the portfolio of an architect is an essential part of your work, it is, unfortunately, all you need. When we are looking for a job, having a strong network of support can make a difference when we apply for a position. Getting recommendations from our professors, colleagues, and former employers can be of great help, too. This is why it is essential to start networking and building that support as early as we can.
Be Aware of Your Value
Last but not least, one of the best ways to get a job in architecture is being aware of your value. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is only one part of it. Before applying for a job at any company, you should be able to identify what you can bring besides your skills. This is, of course, easier said than done. However, it will make the job interview and application process easier for you and the hiring manager. Just remember to stay humble yet confident of yourself.
