As we have seen in previous posts, engineering design is an interesting, rewarding professional path. But what are the requirements to become a design engineer? Here’s what you need to know if you are considering a career in engineering design.
Education and Skills
In order to become a design engineer, you need a bachelor’s degree in any of the following fields:
- Design engineering
- Mechanical engineering
- Civil engineering
- Electrical engineering
People who choose to pursue these degrees tend to have a set of core skills in common. While you may think that they’re obvious, they’re worth mentioning so you can get a clearer picture of what it takes to become a design engineer.
Some of the skills you must possess to succeed in this field include mathematical abilities, attention to detail, spatial awareness, creativity, organization, and strong problem-solving and teamwork abilities.
Engineering design is an increasingly complex and demanding field where certifications go a long way toward expanding one’s employment opportunities.
Some of the certifications design engineers tend to choose more often include:
- AutoCAD certifications
- ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) certifications
- CAEM (Certified Associate in Engineering Management)
- CPEM (Certified Professional in Engineering Management)
Keep in mind that this is a non-exhaustive list and that engineering design evolves constantly, so it’s entirely possible that new certifications become standard in the near future.
